I’ve been working in technology for 20 years, primarily in the area of mergers and acquisitions, but also as a startup CEO (three times). To wit: I was Oracle’s Senior Vice President of Corporate Development, then CEO of Cerberian, then CEO of Levanta. Now I’m CEO at iCiX, the leading online industry network for managing documentation, compliance, information and communication.
Some people find it interesting that before I worked in technology, I was a high school English teacher and coached basketball and track teams.
I have four amazing boys, two cool stepsons and two nearly perfect daughters-in-law, ranging in age from 26 to 8. I refer to my wife, Shantele, as “America’s Dreamgirl,” because she is. I love sports, books, tech, movies and politics, and I might post on any of those topics.

You’re supposed to put up a supermodel pose picture of yourself here! Come on.
Unlike you, I don’t have such a thing. Photoshop can only do so much.
There, Hannah. A picture is up. Best I could do.
Some motherly advice…..please replace your current picture with an earlier photo i.e.photo from your 1st blog….
Sure, but…ummm… why?
As a first time visitor to this web blog and the author’s views, I have to admit that I am impressed. I cannot remember when I have read articles that are so well written and thought-out. It takes a lot to impress me, especially when the author is my soon to be son-in-law. Kudos to you (and I’m not talking about the Mars granola bar).
Keep up the good work. It helps me sort things out (oh no, a sentence ending in a preposition). You thinking through all the issues instead of me over-thinking them; I like it!!!!!
So What about last night’s debate between Obama and you know who……..
Oh, the other candidate present was John McCain–it seemed to have slipped your mind
Well…………..Just read your most recent rant. You continue to amaze me with your plethora of knowledge.
BTW Great Wedding! Great Family! So glad to see everyone upclose. Thanks, I now have 7 grandchildren and I believe one great grandchild (on the way). Wow I feel OOOOLLLLLDDDDD. It’s all good though.
Hello Matt! Congrats on the wedding! Wish we could have been there. I don’t want to see your face, but I like to see the kids’! They’re much cuter!
Love you anyway, Kelli (and Jake)
is that a pic of amanoka villa on discovery bay? heading there with my family (2 girls 7 & 10) and other families. any tips?
By “that”, I presume that you are referring to one of the pictures on my how-to-vacation post. The answer is: no, it’s not amanoka villa, but it’s close. About 200 yards down the road.
Discovery Bay itself is a little sleepy, but that’s actually sort of nice. One word of warning: it’s possible that directly across the bay from your villa, there will be a huge container ship docked. It can happen in Discovery Bay, which is a working port.
The water is lovely, and there are tons of things to do fairly nearby. Just east of town there is a nice cave system, and a guided tour (via rowboat) of the cave is fun. My son and I had a great time snorkeling by simply asking the cook at our villa to find us someone to take us. We ended up on this entirely deserted bay in a leaky rowboat with a fisherman named Salvan, and it was a blast. We saw a huge ray and a sizeable nurse shark, in addition to all of the normal stuff. I think we paid Salvan something like $40 to take us, and he even provided the equipment.
My advice would be different than the normal guidebooks: Don’t avoid all the people trying to sell you stuff. We bought some great lobster from a guy who had just left the water at the edge of the bay and was trying to sell them on his walk home. We also just had interesting conversations with local people, who are really nice and fun to talk with.
Have a great time! We really loved it there.
Hi Matt,
Although our political views differ a bit, you gave me some interesting food for thought. I consider myself a student first and foremost, and I try to keep an open mind. You and your brother Mike are incredible writers.
Let us know when you’re back in Idaho. We’d love to see you. BTW, I’ll put a link to your site on ours.
